The MicroTech Ergonomic Seating Collection for Clean Rooms and Static-Control Workspaces
There are many differences between technical chairs and stools and seating used in more conventional workplaces such as offices, but they should share one main objective – to provide ergonomic support for users. Today, our MicroTech Collection includes designs from our three seating lines, including award-winning models and many popular proven performers – all meeting rigid contamination and static control industry standards. And, thanks to the modular construction of BioFit chairs, we're confident we have a model with the features necessary to meet your workplace, task and budget requirements.
BioFit Clean Room Chairs and Stools
Clean room products in the BioFit MicroTech Collection range from International Standards Organization (ISO) 14644-1 Class 3 to ISO Class 8 (approximately equal to FS209E Class 1 to FS209E Class 100,000). While ISO standards do not apply to equipment used in clean rooms, you can have peace of mind knowing that BioFit has always maintained that our clean room products must meet or exceed the particulate cleanliness objectives of the rooms in which they will be used. Precision-designed and tested components and the assembly processes outlined below combine to meet the stated level of ISO cleanliness requirements:
ISO 3 Seating
Most MicroTech ISO 3 models feature BioFit’s exclusive under-seat airflow-exchange system. The system includes an air reservoir encased in a protective pan attached to the seat. When you sit in the chair, the air in the seat cushion discharges into the reservoir and does not escape into the surrounding clean room environment. Component assembly, wipe down and packaging takes place under a laminar flow clean hood. Final assembly is handled by the customer in a clean setting.
ISO 4 Seating
BioFit ISO 4 seating is highlighted by the proprietary under-seat airflow-exchange system used in our ISO 3 seating. To assure clean room compatibility at the ISO 4 level, these models are also pre-assembled, cleaned and packaged under a laminar flow clean hood, with the customer conducting final assembly.
ISO 5 Seating
Constructed much like higher classes of MicroTech Collection seating, ISO 5 models feature an in-seat filtration system. The system traps particulates while allowing the seat to conform to the user’s body shape. The filter allows unrestricted airflow with a filter permeability of 230 cfm/ft2. The polypropylene filter media trap particles 0.1 microns and larger.
ISO 6 Seating
This class of seating does not feature a seat filter or air exchange system, and seats and backrests are not sealed. Upholstered models use the same upholstery options as ISO 5 models and include a vinyl wrap under the seat that matches the rest the upholstery. This under wrap covers the baseboard and exhaust ports of the seat and serves as a rough filter.
ISO 7 & 8 Seating
Models in many of our most popular seating series are available in ISO 7 and 8 configurations.
Utility Clean Room Seating
We offer a selection of hard-surfaced chairs and stools rated for ISO 4, 5 and 6 environments.
Chairs and Stools for Static Control / ESD Settings
You can turn to BioFit to meet your static control / electrostatic dissipative (ESD) seating needs, as our MicroTech Collection offers over 15 ESD models for facilities in the communications, electronics, defense, and computer industries and more. Simply, ESD is the transfer of an electrical charge between two sources, including the release of electricity from the human body or a conventional chair as it rolls across the floor. The primary concern with ESD is the effect it has on equipment or sensitive components, flammable or explosive materials, etc. For example, the same harmless shock a person gets when touching a doorknob from static electricity generated by walking across a carpet contains enough electricity to damage an electronic circuit board.
ESD Seating Construction
BioFit static control seating is constructed with components designed to ground the user and the chair, thus safety controlling electrostatic discharge from you and your BioFit ESD chair. In addition to featuring the full ergonomic functionality for which our seating is known, special components and assembly techniques used in our ESD models include:
-
Upholstery that is tested and certified to meet static control requirements
-
Carbon-impregnated upholstery with interior strip or mesh to provide continuity of electric conductance
-
Chair backrests with conductive polypropylene rear panels
-
Arms which are grounded through mounting bracket
-
All-metal seat control support brackets to provide conductive continuity
-
Seat adjustment pneumatic cylinders with spring-loaded contact ball bearing assemblies to assure continuity throughout the chair
-
Five-legged metal bases
-
Conductive casters or glides
Drag chains to assure continuity from the chairs to the ground, providing an additional ground point in the event the seating casters get dirty and fail; note that the floor must be static dissipative to accept and drain the charge from the chair
All ESD seating is tested to ANSI/ESD STM 12.1, which is compliance with any S20.20 program. Our in-house testing of all ESD seating meets and exceeds the TR-53 validation standard. Testing reports are available upon request, and can be used as validation for your EPA needs.
Footrests Deliver Additional Support in Static-Control Workplaces
BioFit adjustable footrests with ESD performance packages complete your ergonomic experience in static control settings. Available in two different sizes, they feature all-welded steel construction, chrome finish on metal parts and are specially configured for use in ESD environments.
